So the Obama administration is supposed to be all about transparency, particularly when it comes to lobbyists, right? Now it looks like even the do-gooders have made some missteps.

Politico’s Chris Frates broke the story this morning that the White House is continuing to meet with lobbyists, just not always inside the famous Pennsylvania Avenue mansion. Instead, they’re going up the street to townhouses off White House property — out of the public eye and off the public record.

The White House alleges that the Jackson Place additional meeting space is used when the White House is filled or when there’s no time to clear participants through the security screening. But some of the lobbyists involved think otherwise.

Tyson Slocum, the director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program, is featured today on the opinion page of AOL News. President Barack Obama is set to release his budget proposal next week, and when it comes to his energy allocations, we’re not expecting much. Tyson elaborates below:

If President Barack Obama’s budget proposal tracks the broad game plan for energy policy that he laid out in his State of the Union address, be prepared for a letdown when the numbers come out on Monday. For all of his “big ideas” — from Sputnik to job creation, high-speed rail to high-speed Internet — Obama offered underpowered solutions.

If you read one thing today…

We know you’ve been hearing a lot about proposed attacks on regulation, stemming from House oversight committee chair Darrell Issa asking industries to report back which regulations they’d most like to see axed. But now industry dreams could become a reality.

The Obama administration’s regulatory agenda will be on trial this week on the House floor and in committee hearings, and Issa is armed with industry wish lists (2,000 pages worth!).

“We do big things.”

This was inspiring rhetoric from President Barack Obama in last night’s State of the Union address.

Many of the president’s broad themes — especially the need to promote innovation, step up public investment, and preserve a vital, affirmative role for government — are important expressions of how the nation can do big things.

But there were many sources of concern in the speech as well.

President Barack Obama’s opinion editorial today adopts business and right-wing think-tank talking points about the harms of regulation and urges “balance” in achieving the right amount of regulation – not so little that we fail to protect the public, and not so much as to harm the economy.

This is the wrong way to think about regulation, and it is the wrong direction for the American people. Markets cannot function without proper regulation. That means businesses cannot function without proper regulation. We do not need a “balance” between regulation and the free market. We need effective regulations that foster the right types of markets.

The dominant fact of American life in recent years has been grossly inadequate public protections. In the past several years, under-regulation and corporate disregard of safety rules have resulted in multiple salmonella and E. coli outbreaks, a flood of lead-tainted toys, a massive and environmentally devastating oil spill, deadly mine disasters and the collapse of our economy, which has cost eight million American jobs. We need to focus most urgently on fixing these problems and others, not burden agencies, which already are overworked and under-resourced, with more internal reviews and red tape.
