When the U.S. Supreme Court decided last year in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that corporations’ donations were considered a form of free speech, it opened up a massive loophole in the amount of money corporations are able to spend to influence elections. Think that’s outrageous? Good. Now it’s your turn to exercise your right to free speech.

Public Citizen, along with hundreds of activists across the country, is fighting back.

On Wednesday, more than 200 house parties are being held across the nation to discuss plans for the two-year anniversary of Citizens United.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will join the parties via webinar and conference call.

Communities can join together with Public Citizen’s Democracy is for People campaign and brainstorm ways to mark the anniversary of the ruling and call for its overturning.

As pointed out in a Letter to the Editor in The Davis Enterprise, Occupy Wall Street has unleashed a passion in people to combat corporate power. Many of the complaints of the so-called 99% have stemmed from corporations’ massive control over government policies and elections. It’s time to begin planning how to take back democracy for the people.

If you’re one of those out in the Occupy movements, fear not. Many of the Occupy protests will also be streaming these house parties including Occupy Albuquerque, Occupy Allentown, Occupy Chicago, Occupy Columbus, Occupy Los Angeles, Occupy Miami, Occupy San Luis Obsipo, Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Orange County and Occupy D.C.

People in Grass County, Calif., are one of many communities joining in the house parties, complete with watching the film, “The Story of Citizens United vs. the FEC,” and talking to locals who took to the streets in New York at the Occupy Wall Street protests. If all of this isn’t enough to convince you to get out to these house parties, the free food should definitely push you over the edge.
