We have been shocked, outraged and deeply saddened by the Gulf Oil Catastrophe. It is time to prevent future oil disasters from happening.

You are part of a growing movement calling on President Obama to ban offshore drilling and invest in clean energy. Across the country, citizens are sending letters and signing petitions to communicate to the Administration that expanding offshore drilling is no longer an option. Just to make sure the message is being received loud and clear, we are taking it directly to the White House. Can you join us?

Join us on Tuesday (tomorrow!) from 12:30-1:30pm to march from the Interior Department to the White House and help deliver the important message to President Obama: Ban offshore drilling and invest in clean energy!

Please RSVP here to let us know you can make it!

WHAT: “Crude Awakening” march to the White House

WHEN: Tuesday, May 11 12:30-1:30pm

WHERE: Meet in Triangle Park, across from the Interior Department at 18th & C St. NW

We will depart Triangle Park at 12:45 sharp!

This is a unique moment, and we have the opportunity to shape the national story around this terrible disaster. Do we want to just stop any new offshore drilling, or do we want to take one step farther and begin the wholesale transformation to clean, safe energy? How about some of the old “yes, we can,” spirit?

Please join us tomorrow and thank you for your commitment and your action.

In the last several months, there have been a shocking number of workplace tragedies.  On April 2, an explosion at the Tesoro oil refinery in Washington killed five workers.  On April 5, an explosion at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia killed 29 miners.  And then on April 20, a BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 oil rig workers.

Last week, Senators Byrd and Rockefeller introduced two amendments that would require corporations with high-risk workplaces to disclose health and safety violations in reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

One of the amendments, led by Sen. Byrd, would require disclosure about all high-risk workplaces including violations, pending lawsuits concerning health and safety violations, and negative trends in health or safety conditions.  The other, led by Sen. Rockefeller, would require disclosure from mining companies about serious violations that posed an imminent hazard, or required mine workers to be removed from areas of mines.  Both amendments would require this information be included in reports filed with the SEC.
