Who has a 2001 Volkswagen that is still under the standard 5yr warranty? Lets not be disingenuous when talking about the impact on vehicle components and legacy vehicles. Many legacy vehicles need to be replaced because of their crappy mileage. The primary auto parts that might need to be replaced are the rubber components involved in direct contact with the fuel, namely seals. Chances are those seals are already degrading just due to age.
Don't blame the ethanol or the vehicle. Blame the corn lobby. They are the ones interested in boosting ethanol from their source. Ethanol as a combustive fuel is much safer on health and resources than any other existing petroleum derivative. Our main problem is that we should be making it from more efficient sources like sugar beets or waste products like cellulose. And yes, i know methanol is the primary form of cellulose alcohol but there are technologies in the works to convert cellulose to sugars convertible to ethanol.
Isn't the corn industry powerful and rich enough already considering how much corn syrup they dump in our food?
